The W.E.J. Craig Travelling Scholarship

The W.E.J. Craig Travelling Scholarship is funded through the W.E.J. Craig Travelling Scholarship Fund and is open to University of Melbourne graduates planning to undertake research/studies in animal husbandry at an overseas tertiary institution. While preference is given to applicants whose studies will be undertaken at Queen's University, Belfast, all applicants who wish to undertake studies in animal husbandry at any overseas institution are strongly encouraged to apply.

The value of the W.E.J. Craig Travelling Scholarship is adjusted if the recipient receives another scholarship for the course/research. Please see the scholarship Guidelines below for further information.

The scholarship is awarded for a minimum of one, and a maximum of three, years.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must be graduates of the University of Melbourne.

Applicants must be planning to undertake a course or research program in animal husbandry, at a tertiary institution overseas.

For the purpose of this scholarship, 'Animal Husbandry' is the production and management of animals and animal products. It is study/research regarding:

  1. the principles of inheritance and their applications in the selection and breeding of agricultural animals,
  2. the prevention and control of disease in agricultural animals,
  3. the relationship between animal diet and the production of meat, milk, fish, poultry, wool and eggs, the body functions and processes of agricultural animals, and
  4. the behaviour and welfare of animals in managed systems.

The study or research can form part of a University of Melbourne degree or result in a degree from an overseas institution. Applicants who wish to complete the study/research overseas as part of their University of Melbourne qualification must have already obtained a prior University of Melbourne qualification.

Applicants who wish to credit their overseas studies/research toward a University of Melbourne degree must obtain approval from their faculty.

Applicants cannot apply for the W.E.J. Craig Travelling Scholarship for study/research which has already commenced or has been completed. The scholarship will not be awarded retrospectively.

Applicants who already hold a qualification at the same or higher level as the course for which the scholarship is sought are ineligible.

Previous recipients (ie. payment of entitlements have been received) cannot re-apply for this scholarship.

Applicants will be expected to complete their University of Melbourne qualifications before commencing an overseas qualification. The only exception applies to those applicants for whom their overseas studies will form part of their University of Melbourne qualification.

Selection criteria

The scholarship is awarded on the basis of:

Selection will be made by the Graduate Research Scholarships Committee (GRSC). The Committee may request an interview with the short-listed applicants. It is anticipated that this year's interviews will be held on Friday August 15.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for other scholarships to support their overseas studies/research. Scholarship information can be obtained from JASON, the British Council, the Association of Commonwealth Universities website and the institution at which the studies will be undertaken. Applicants intending to undertake a research degree in the United Kingdom are advised to apply for the Overseas Research Students Award Scheme.

Application process

Applications for 2008 have now closed. For information only, you may download the Application Form, Guidelines, Referee Report Form and Estimated Budget Form. Applicants are advised to read the Guidelines before submitting an application.

Applicants can only be considered if they meet the eligibility requirements stated above, and the required documents are submitted with the application by the closing date. It is suggested that applicants keep a copy of their application for future reference.

Documents required

The completed application form should be submitted with the following documents:

  1. Official transcript/s of all tertiary study undertaken to date. The transcript/s should include a results key, ie. an explanation of the university's grading system.
  2. A resume which provides a list of qualifications undertaken, academic prizes, relevant work experience and extra-curricular activities, including any involvement in community activities.
  3. Evidence of acceptance into a course or research program in animal husbandry, or a formal research agreement, or evidence that direct contact has been made with the course co-ordinator or prospective supervisor (eg. via email)
  4. A written statement providing full details of the proposed research or course (up to 2 pages).
  5. A completed Estimated Budget form (see above), which accompanies the Application Form. The budget information should include estimates of the cost of flights, living expenses and university fees.
  6. Two academic references (on the referee report form provided) and one personal reference (free format). The references should be marked 'confidential' and sent directly by the referees to Lydia Firanyi in the Melbourne Scholarships Office, Level 3, John Smyth Building, University of Melbourne, 3010. Senior academic staff members who are familiar with the applicant's most recent academic work and achievements, should provide the academic references. The personal reference should comment on the applicant's extra-curricular activities and personal qualities.

Application outcome

Applicants will be advised by early August whether they have been short-listed for an interview. Short-listed applicants will receive written notification of their success or otherwise by late August.

Closing date

30 June (or the next working day if this date falls on a weekend). Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.
